By 2036, the regional strategy is no longer perceived as a single document adopted once for several years.
Alongside it, a living map of possible futures has emerged.
It simultaneously shows changes already underway, early signals, promising technologies, regional projects, public expectations, and alternative scenarios. The map displays not a single inevitable future, but multiple trajectories.
For one region, such a fork might be transport; for another, demographics; for a third, a new industrial specialization; for a fourth, a change in the role of small towns.
The prerequisite already exists. Russia’s Spatial Development Strategy provides for the creation of a digital platform for managing comprehensive socio-economic and spatial development, combining sectoral and spatial priorities, infrastructure plans, and territorial monitoring. The task has also been set to develop Russian geospatial support integrated with regional and municipal systems.
The next step was adding a layer of the future to the data.
First, official long-term plans appeared on the map. Then, scientific and technological trends and events capable of changing the territory. After that, expert scenarios and residents’ proposals. Finally, the system learned to show interconnections: for example, how new transport infrastructure might affect settlement patterns, the labor market, tourism, and access to education.
The map does not assert that everything plotted will necessarily happen. On the contrary, its value lies in demonstrating uncertainty.
What we have done
We have developed the «Map of the Future of Russia» as a space for regional postulates and scenarios. We have connected the territory with thematic areas of the future, learned to show alternative directions, and to collect participants’ proposals in a unified structure.
We have made the map not a catalog of forecasts, but an interface for collective exploration of Russia’s possible futures.
